Center for Electrochemical Science and Engineering
The primary mission of the Center for Electrochemical Science
and Engineering is to forge industry-IIT partnerships for the
development and commercialization of electrochemical technologies
for stationary and mobile applications. To achieve this objective,
the center carries out basic and applied research; provides strategic
direction and operational support as required in cooperative research
with industry; develops innovative educational programs with concentrations
or specializations in electrochemical science and engineering;
communicates and transfers research and analytical results to
industry.
Energy+Power
Center
The IIT Energy + Power was formed in 1989 through two endowed
professorships in energy and power engineering and management,
and Energy/Environment/Economics (E3) by the Max McGraw Foundation.
The activities of the center include sustainable global energy
development; energy resource assessment; engineering, economic
and environmental impact studies of U.S. and global energy production,
transmission, storage, conversion and utilization systems; as
well as a wide range if energy policy studies.
National Center for Food
Safety and Technology
The National Center for Food Safety and Technology (NCFST) was
founded in 1992 to provide a forum for government, academic and
industry scientists to identify and conduct research on emerging
food safety issues. The NCFST is the only Food and Drug Administration
(FDA) supported collaborative facility for food-safety research
in the world. Research is broken down into four program areas
which are directed by working groups involving an FDA and an IIT
research director. The four program areas are: Food Packaging,
Biotechnology, Food Processing, and Hazard Analysis Critical Control
Points/Food Safety. The NCFST is located at the Daniel F. and
Ada L. Rice Campus in Wheaton, Illinois.
Pritzker
Institute of Medical Engineering
The Pritzker Institute of Medical Engineering has an established
tenure track faculty and confers a doctoral degree in biomedical
engineering. Currently, three faculty members are tenured in the
Institute. In October 2000 a Special Opportunity Award from the
Whitaker Foundation was received which will permit the expansion
of the current tenure track faculty by 4 members. These faculty
members are currently being recruited. The Institute plans to
expand to10 tenure track faculty within 5 years and offer an undergraduate
degree in biomedical engineering. Several IIT departments contribute
courses and faculty to the graduate program: Biological, Chemical,
and Physical Science; Chemical and Environmental Engineering;
Computer Science; Electrical and Computer Engineering; Mechanical,
Materials and Aerospace Engineering; the Institute of Psychology;
and the Center for Ethics in the Professions. In addition, faculty
from the Division of the Biological Sciences and the Pritzker
School of Medicine at The University of Chicago cooperate in the
educational and research components of the doctoral program. Students
in the biomedical program may take courses and pursue their research
at both IIT and The University of Chicago.
