Highlighting ChBE Students, Faculty and Alumni

The ChBE department newsletter began as INform in 1995. Prof. Hamid Arastoopour had been

 elected chairman of the department shortly after the merger of the chemical engineering and the environmental engineering departments at IIT on June 1, 1995. He felt it "a propitious time to initiate an annual newsletter written expressly for the alumni, friends and supporters of the IIT Chemical, Environmental and Gas Engineering programs."

After nine issues of INform, Prof. Arastoopour became the dean of Armour College of Engineering.

 One more issue of the newsletter as INform followed, under the chairmanship of Fouad Teymour.

In 2005, the department decided to develop a new embodiment of its department newsletter. The newsletter was renamed Crosslinks (through a department and alumni-wide contest) to better reflect the chemical and environmental engineering disciplines and the inter-relations between the ChBE department and its alumni, students and faculty.

The format of the newsletter, although the same size as INform (8.5 x 11 inches), took on a look more like a magazine in its layout and has become exceedingly ambitious in its feature coverage of department research activities, alumni success stories and recollections, department news and upcoming events, and student and faculty activities and achievements.

In this new format, a section of the newsletter is dedicated to tell the stories of the department's alumni and their accomplishments, including engaging anecdotes about their roads to successful careers and how their time with the department influenced their career choices.

In 2006, the 2005 issue of Crosslinks was honored with a silver award as part of the International Davey Awards.  The publication followed-up this achievement by being presented with an award from the Business Marketing Association in 2007.
